Milwaukee Brewers' outfielder Christian Yelich is set to miss the remainder of the 2024 MLB season, as he prepares to undergo season-ending back surgery this Friday. The announcement was made on Thursday by both Yelich and the Brewers, marking a significant blow to the team as they push towards the playoffs.
Yelich, who has battled persistent back issues throughout much of his career, has been unable to play since July 23. His latest bout of lower back inflammation, ongoing since July, has prompted the decision for surgery. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Brandon Rebholz, a leading expert in the field.
"After careful consideration and consultation with medical personnel, I have decided to undergo season-ending back surgery," Yelich stated. "I ultimately felt it was in the best interest of myself and the Brewers to have the surgery with the expectation of being back at 100% for next season."
Before his injury, Yelich was enjoying a remarkable bounce-back season, boasting a .315/.406/.504 slash line, 11 home runs, and 21 stolen bases over 73 games. His performance translated to an impressive 152 OPS+, reviving memories of his MVP-caliber potential.
"We have a very special team here and it will be disappointing not to be able to contribute on the field down the stretch," Yelich expressed, reflecting on his frustration about being sidelined. "However, I have the utmost confidence in my teammates and will be cheering them on with all of you, the great fans of Milwaukee. Thank you for all your support. Go Brewers!"
The Brewers have indeed shown resilience since Yelich's last appearance, managing an 11-9 record without their star outfielder. The team currently stands at 69-52, maintaining a nine-game lead in the NL Central – the largest division lead in baseball. Despite Yelich's absence, the Brewers have continued to thrive, a testament to their deep roster and robust team dynamics.
The team's regular lineup includes a cadre of left-handed hitters, such as Jake Bauers, Tyler Black, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Brice Turang. Despite attempts to secure a left-handed hitter to replace Yelich before the July 30 trade deadline, the Brewers were unsuccessful in bringing in new talent. Nevertheless, the current squad has stepped up admirably in Yelich's absence.
Yelich's back problems have been a recurring issue throughout his career. This year marks the fifth season of his nine-year, $215 million contract extension signed in March 2020. Under this deal, Yelich stands to earn $26 million annually from 2025 to 2028, with a $20 million mutual option for 2029. Despite his offensive prowess, Yelich's defensive metrics at this stage of his career have graded out as below average.
The Brewers' organization remains optimistic about their chances this season, confident in their ability to adapt and compete despite the loss of one of their key players. Yelich’s decision to undergo surgery is seen as a strategic move for both his health and the team's future success.
The Brewers will now aim to sustain their winning momentum, with the playoffs in sight. Meanwhile, Yelich's focus shifts towards recovery and returning to full strength for the next season.
