Walker Buehler Returns to the Injured List

Walker Buehler Returns to the Injured List

Walker Buehler heads to the injured list once again, this time due to right hip inflammation. The Dodgers’ pitcher missed most of 2022 and the entirety of 2023, recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. He has struggled to regain the form that made him a cornerstone of the Dodgers' rotation from 2018 to 2021. During those years, Buehler was a force to be reckoned with, winning 39 games and maintaining an ERA that never soared above 3.44.

2024 Struggles After Comeback

Since making his return on May 8, 2024, Buehler has had a rough go of it, posting a 1-4 record with a 5.84 ERA over eight starts. His most recent outing in Colorado epitomized his struggles, where he took a line drive off his hip but remained in the game. Unfortunately, he surrendered seven runs on seven hits, including two home runs. It was evident that he was not at his best.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned that Buehler’s hip had been sore for several starts. Roberts believes that a stint on the injured list will offer Buehler the opportunity to regroup, both physically and mentally. "I think he's a little bit sort of finding himself again. I think he's still in search mode. So, as he's getting back to health, I think for the mind and some clarity, I think this will be a good thing," Roberts said.

Bobby Miller Activated

In a corresponding move, the Dodgers activated promising pitcher Bobby Miller. Miller has not pitched since April 10 due to right shoulder inflammation. In his second major league season, Miller has showcased his potential. This year, he has a 1-1 record with a 5.40 ERA in three starts.

Miller had an impressive rookie year in 2023 and his returning presence adds a layer of depth to a Dodgers pitching staff beleaguered by injuries. His ability to step up in Buehler’s absence is crucial for the team’s continuity and success.

Looking Forward

Despite Buehler’s recent struggles, his career statistics remain noteworthy. Over seven seasons, he has compiled a 47-20 record with a 3.17 ERA. The Dodgers remain hopeful that rest and rehabilitation will help him return to top form. Buehler’s resilience and dedication to the team’s future is unwavering. "It sucks to feel kind of invaluable, or like you're hampering your team. At the end of the day, we really like our team and want to be ready for the end of the year. And I'm going to do whatever I need to do to feel like I can help our team at the end of the year, and do everything in my power to be valuable enough to be on those rosters," Buehler expressed.

Injuries are an inevitable part of Major League Baseball, and the Dodgers have shown remarkable depth and flexibility in navigating them. The team’s ability to adapt, with players like Bobby Miller stepping up, is a testament to their preparedness and resilience.

All eyes will be on Walker Buehler's recovery and eventual return. While his journey back to his former self may be challenging, the Dodgers organization and fans alike remain optimistic that he can overcome this and once again be a valuable asset to the team.
