Los Angeles Lakers Season Preview with JJ Redick as Head Coach

The Los Angeles Lakers are gearing up for what promises to be an intriguing NBA season under the leadership of their new head coach, JJ Redick. All eyes are on the potential father-son duo of LeBron James and Bronny James, which could be a historic moment in the making.

New Beginnings and Legacy

LeBron James, now entering his 22nd NBA season at 39 years old, remains a pivotal figure for the Lakers. This season holds extra significance as his son, Bronny James, selected by the Lakers with the 55th pick in the second round, could join him on the court. While Bronny spent only one season at USC, his journey with the Lakers is expected to begin prominently in the G League, honing his skills before making a significant impact on the main roster.

"We obviously have talked about it as a staff and we've gotten into some specifics of what that might look like," said JJ Redick. "But we haven't committed to anything. And obviously, there's a discussion to be had once we're all together with Bronny and LeBron, too. They should be a part of that discussion as well."

Team Dynamics

The Lakers' roster has remained largely consistent with last season, a decision driven by the philosophy of maintaining sustainable excellence. General Manager Rob Pelinka elaborated, "I think the philosophy that JJ and I are aligned on is we want to build sustainable Lakers excellence. And I think, when we talk about moves, you can make a move that backfires. I think every GM has made a trade where he says, 'Maybe that one wasn't ideal.' But every lens that we look through has to lead to sustainable Lakers excellence."

Gabe Vincent and Jalen-Hood Schifino are in good health, ready to contribute significantly. However, the team does have concerns, particularly regarding Jarred Vanderbilt, who underwent procedures on both feet during the offseason. "We have a lot of optimism that when the real games start, he'll be available," Pelinka noted. "Between now and then, there is still about a month, and there are a lot of ramp-up steps that need to go well, so hopefully there won't be setbacks."

The Redick Era

JJ Redick's transition from player to coach introduces a fresh perspective. The challenge of coaching not just any rising star but LeBron's son adds a unique layer to his new role. "I don't look at it as a challenge," Redick stated. "It's unique from any other challenge of coaching a player or coaching a relationship. Bronny, I feel very fortunate that I get to coach him because he's young and he's hungry, and he's got a lot of inherent skillsets that we can really mold into a really good NBA player."

Anticipation and Expectations

The anticipation is palpable as the Lakers' regular season is set to begin on October 22, opening against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Training sessions have already sparked memorable moments, including a spirited exchange between father and son during a practice play. Pelinka shared an anecdote, "[Bronny] got switched onto LeBron, and LeBron took him baseline, up and under off the glass. The words exchanged afterward were probably more challenging than anything else." To which LeBron simply quipped, "Great defense. Better O."

This season stands as a testament to the blending of legacy and new beginnings. While LeBron continues to defy age with his performance, the prospect of witnessing him play alongside his son brings an emotional and historic element to the court. As the season kicks off, the Lakers' blend of seasoned athletes and young talent poised to make their mark offers fans both excitement and a promising outlook.
