Unexpected Opportunity for Derrick White
As Derrick White stepped onto the practice courts on Sunday, a new, unexpected chapter in his basketball journey began. Arriving at 2:30 a.m. after a grueling flight from the U.S., White was thrust into action as a replacement for the injured Kawhi Leonard on Team USA.
White had initially planned to spend this period enjoying a family vacation in Cabo. However, fate had other plans. White’s call-up to Team USA stirs memories of a similar story from 2019, when he was a last-minute addition to the senior team for the World Cup in China. Back then, he had been playing with the Select Team and secured the final roster spot following the withdrawal of higher-profile guards like De'Aaron Fox and Trae Young.
Reflecting on his 2019 experience, White noted, "It was crazy going from the Select Team to the World Cup team, and I just think now I've just continued to get better and better and so feel much more comfortable. I feel (now) like I did back then and I'm just excited to be here."
White's recent call-up came while he was in his hometown of Parker, Colorado, conducting his annual basketball camp. Fresh off agreeing to a four-year, $126 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics, White is set to bring his championship experience and defensive versatility to Team USA. The Celtics’ NBA title last month was the pinnacle of a season where White's defensive prowess and high-impact plays were key to their success.
His defensive skills, along with his adaptability, make him a valuable asset for Team USA, particularly as they navigate the absence of forward Kevin Durant. It was announced that Durant would miss Monday's exhibition game against Australia due to a rehabilitating strained calf. "Coach Steve Kerr mentioned that Durant focused on shooting drills and rehab work, avoiding contact during practice."
White’s arrival also marks a reunion with some familiar faces. He joins Celtics teammates Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum, along with former team advisor Jeff Van Gundy, now serving as an assistant with Team USA. Tatum, speaking on White’s call-up, expressed his excitement: "I haven't seen D-White since the parade, so excited to have him here. He'll bring some championship DNA to this team."
Indeed, White’s championship experience is expected to be a cornerstone for the team as they prepare for the upcoming challenges. With his unexpected yet fortunate inclusion, Derrick White is poised to contribute significantly to Team USA, mirroring his impactful performance from back in 2019. As the team rallies together, White’s adaptability and defensive prowess will likely play a crucial role in their pursuit of international success.
