Bengals Bolster Depth with Gary Brightwell Signing
In a move signaling their intention to strengthen their backfield depth amidst recent injuries, the Cincinnati Bengals have added Gary Brightwell to their practice squad. Brightwell, who was initially drafted by the New York Giants in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, brings with him a promising albeit interrupted history in the league.
Brightwell's journey in the NFL began with the Giants, where he showcased his skills over two seasons. During his tenure with New York, Brightwell recorded 41 rushes for 164 yards and a touchdown, along with 11 receptions for 92 yards. His burgeoning career was halted by a hamstring injury in the 2022 season, which placed him on injured reserve, interrupting his progress and leaving the Giants to explore other options.
A Season of Transitions
This past summer, Brightwell briefly joined the ranks of the Jacksonville Jaguars during their training camp. While his time there was short-lived, it demonstrated interest from teams across the league in his potential. Just a few months ago, in late August, Brightwell found a temporary home with the Cleveland Browns as a practice squad player. However, his stint with the Browns was even shorter, culminating in his release on October 29.
Evaluating Backfield Moves
The Bengals' decision to sign Brightwell coincides with significant changes to their roster. Recently, running back Zack Moss was sidelined with a neck injury, leading to his placement on injured reserve. The Bengals, proactive in addressing their running back situation, also acquired Khalil Herbert from the Chicago Bears, a move that suggested their intent to keep their backfield robust and prepared for any challenge.
In addition to Brightwell and Herbert, the Bengals also conducted workouts with veteran Leonard Fournette. Fournette, who was drafted fourth overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars from LSU, has experienced an illustrious career, having accumulated over 1,300 yards from scrimmage in two different seasons. In 2019 alone, he amassed an impressive total of 1,674 yards.
Leonard Fournette's Journeys
Fournette’s career has been marked by notable ups and downs since his waiving by the Jaguars in the summer of 2020. He went on to play a key role in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Super Bowl LV victory, and his career statistics include an impressive 4,518 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns. Fournette has also demonstrated his proficiency as a receiver with 312 catches for 2,219 yards and seven touchdowns.
Last season, Fournette joined the Buffalo Bills' practice squad late in October and made fleeting appearances in two games, rushing for 40 yards on 12 carries. His veteran presence and experience could have made him a valuable asset for the Bengals.
A Strategic Acquisition
The addition of Gary Brightwell may not carry the headlining impact of a seasoned player like Fournette; however, it is a strategic acquisition. Brightwell’s versatility and potential can offer the Bengals much-needed support and competition within their practice squad and beyond if given the opportunity. With Moss on the sidelines, Brightwell's signing could prove to be a pivotal move for the Bengals as they navigate the challenges of the current season.
For Brightwell, the Bengals' offer represents another chance to establish himself within the NFL, and for the Bengals, a new opportunity to add depth and possibly unearth another hidden gem to strengthen their lineup. As the season progresses, both parties will be eager to see how this new chapter unfolds.
