Remembering Jacoby Jones: A Star on and off the Field

The world of professional football has lost one of its vibrant personalities with the passing of Jacoby Jones at the age of 40. As the head coach of the Houston Texans, DeMeco Ryans, reflects on his former teammate, he recalls the five seasons they spent together in Houston. "Jacoby was a teammate of mine here for five years. When you talk about a guy who was fun spirited, loving, caring, great teammate, the dance machine, he was a fun guy to be around," Ryans shared.

A Career Marked by Achievement

Jones, a third-round draft pick known for his remarkable athleticism, played an instrumental role during his NFL career. He caught over 200 passes, averaging an impressive 13.5 yards per catch. Notably, Jones earned All-Pro honors in 2012, a season that showcased his extraordinary talent with an average of 30.7 yards per return and two kickoff returns for touchdowns.

Super Bowl XLVII Heroics

Jones' most memorable moments came during Super Bowl XLVII, where he was a key player in the Baltimore Ravens' victory over the San Francisco 49ers. His 56-yard touchdown catch and a record-breaking 108-yard kickoff return were pivotal to the Ravens' 34-31 win. These feats etched Jacoby Jones into the annals of Super Bowl history and solidified his legacy as an exceptional performer on the grandest stage.

A Teammate Remembered

For DeMeco Ryans, the loss of Jones is deeply personal. "Just extending my sincere condolences to the Jones family," said Ryans, reflecting on their time on the field together from 2007 to 2011. "He lit up any room that he walked into just with his great spirit. He'll be truly missed. I was very saddened to hear the news of him passing. Just truly feel sorry for the family and for all of his teammates, all the lives that he has touched."

A Lasting Legacy with the Ravens

Jones continued to make an impact beyond his playing days. In 2023, he was honored as a Ravens legend before a playoff win over Houston, a recognition that brought pride to his former teammate, Ryans. "He was honored as a Ravens legend, so that was a proud moment for me to see him there honored, another organization, and to see him doing that with his son," Ryans recalled.

Giving Back

Jones' contributions extended off the field as well. Ryans fondly remembered Jones' dedication to youth and community work. "Jacoby, I remember he always did a great job of working in camps and working with kids. He always did an excellent job of doing that. He'll be missed," Ryans said, highlighting Jones' generosity and commitment to making a difference in the lives of young people.
