The Seattle Kraken have made a groundbreaking addition to their coaching staff, appointing Jessica Campbell as a full-time coach. This historic move marks the first time in NHL history that a woman will serve in a full-time coaching role, further solidifying the Kraken's commitment to progressive and inclusive practices within the sport.
A Historic Appointment
Jessica Campbell brings a wealth of experience to the Kraken, having previously served as an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Her coaching career is studded with significant milestones. Campbell was the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2022. She also made history as the first woman to coach a men's national team during the 2022 IIHF Men's World Championship with Team Germany.
A Proven Track Record
During her tenure with the Firebirds, Campbell managed the team's power play and played an instrumental role in the development of several standout players. Notably, Tye Kartye, who went on to win the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for most outstanding rookie, thrived under her guidance. Kartye's performance included scoring 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) over 77 games for the Kraken.
Commitment to Development
Kraken coach Dan Bylsma praised Campbell’s dedication to player development, stating, “During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level.”
Focus and Determination
Campbell herself remains focused on continuing her upward trajectory in the world of hockey coaching. “I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization,” she reflected. “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal.”
Her dedication to maintaining a growth mindset is apparent. “I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is,” she emphasized.
A Multi-Faceted Coach
Campbell's coaching portfolio extends beyond team roles; she has also worked as a power-skating coach for elite athletes like Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson. In 2021, she took on a coaching role with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers and worked with Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer during the 2022 IIHF Men's World Championship.
Future Responsibilities
As she joins the Kraken's coaching ranks, Campbell is anticipated to take on significant responsibilities, particularly in heading the team's power play. Given her proven success in managing the Firebirds' power play, her transition to the NHL is a promising development for the Kraken's strategy and performance.
The Seattle Kraken’s innovative appointment of Jessica Campbell is more than a symbolic gesture; it represents a strategic enhancement to their coaching team. With her extensive experience and unwavering commitment to the sport, Campbell is poised to make a significant impact in the NHL, driving both the Kraken and the broader field of hockey toward new heights.
